A town rebuilding
Forges burn, caravans move, and mining operations continue, but prosperity has not erased the scars of famine and plague.
THE SOUTHERN FRONTIER
A hard-edged town in the Southern Tropics of Rathovan, where trade, old mines, strict order, and buried danger meet beneath the mountains.
Helsreik began as a Dominion frontier watch-town guarding the mountain pass and river routes. Mining, timber, and caravan trade brought prosperity. When the Dominion withdrew, plague, famine, raids, and collapsing mines pushed the settlement toward ruin.
The town survived under the rule of Baron Jean Edgar Moreau, whose Blackcloaks restored supply lines and defences. That rescue came with a price: in Helsreik, order is not an abstract idea. It is the system that kept the gates standing, and the authority that now reaches into everyday life.
Forges burn, caravans move, and mining operations continue, but prosperity has not erased the scars of famine and plague.
Disappearances, strange creatures, old mine roads, and ruins beneath the mountains keep suspicion close to the surface.
The Baron, Town Guard, Magistrate, Magic Authority, churches, guilds, traders, miners, healers, and warbands all have interests in what Helsreik becomes.
Warbands are not just passing soldiers. They can influence the town’s daily life, defend its people, pursue its threats, and decide which powers they are willing to trust.
Helsreik’s economy gives characters reasons to move through town: guarding a caravan, finding supplies, repairing equipment, mining, trading, healing, carrying messages, or looking for paid work.
Order, law, guild interests, and local authority create pressure points. A party can keep its head down, take a side, or discover that neutrality is its own kind of decision.
The safest-looking job may lead toward an old mine road, a missing traveller, an unexplained ruin, or something that should have stayed beneath the mountain.
A frontier town is made from repeated small acts: helping a neighbour, sharing news, defending a street, paying a debt, or deciding who gets a place at the table.
This page is an Avencort introduction to the setting. Always use the current official Swordcraft Brisbane event guide and organiser instructions for live event rules, dates, and mechanics.
A frontier town full of unanswered questions is exactly the kind of place an adventuring company finds difficult to leave alone. We may arrive looking for work, answers, opportunity, or simply a roof that does not leak. What keeps us in Helsreik is the same thing that keeps any good party together: there is always one more problem to solve.
Our goal is not to decide what Helsreik should become from outside it. Our characters should listen, learn, make choices, and accept that those choices have consequences. The town is bigger than one warband, and that is what makes it worth playing in.
